Architectural associate for a multifaceted facilities master plan that aligns strategies for physical space development within MCW’s overarching strategic plans for their educational and research enterprises. Through a thoughtful and deliberate methodology, the plan assessed capabilities of existing assets, identified operational and planning strategies to improve utilization of existing educational facilities, and rightsized projections for new construction research building needs.

Architectural associate for the planning and design of a new, three-story expansion for the School of Veterinary Medicine. Flad, in association with Foil Wyatt Architects & Planners, completed an initial feasibility study and are now providing full design services for the 140,000-square-foot addition and 29,000-square-foot renovation. The expansion will connect to the existing clinic; provide new research, ABSL-3, BSL-2, and BSL-3 laboratories; and include new offices, conference rooms, and shared collaboration/interaction spaces to support the teaching hospital. The clinical space will be expanded to increase access to the small and large animal isolation suites that are required to meet accreditation standards, increase the quantity of specialized surgery and imaging equipment, provide imaging space for horses and cattle, and separate patient access to medical oncology services. Additional space will be dedicated to student write-up rooms, treatment planning, medical records updates, client communications, and classrooms.

Architectural associate for a new, 159,000-square-foot, multifaceted chemical production facility. The highly adaptable manufacturing systems enable agile operations for Promega’s expansive line of products to support cellular and molecular biology science. The manufacturing program includes a range of scale up to 500-gallon volumes. Operational support spaces include quality control and process development capabilities, as well as a GMP warehouse for incoming materials and finished product staging. Reflecting Promega’s commitment to team member well-being, the manufacturing spaces include access to extensive natural light, while office, conference, and all-hands meeting areas offer exceptional transparency to the exterior and the facility’s natural setting.

Architectural associate for a 250,000-square-foot regional testing lab to support clinical testing throughout the Northeast Region. The first floor consists of 175,000 square feet of laboratory, sample receipt, visitor entry, and warehousing. The second floor includes the cafeteria and town hall spaces, offices, and viewing platform to the first floor automated processing lines.

Architectural associate for a comprehensive campus master plan for one of the country’s leading independent, scientific research institutions focusing on cardiovascular and diabetic conditions and infectious diseases such as hepatitis, malaria, and tuberculosis. The client operates a variety of lab, office, and research animal spaces to support their work, including the only privately managed BSL-4 maximum containment laboratory. Areas of research include virology and immunology, genetics, and the use of NHPs as models of human disease. The Institute also houses the Southwest National Primate Research Center.

The plan identified a multiphase building program to provide cutting-edge healthcare services to the growing population of Southwest Florida. The first phase will result in approximately 565,0000 square feet of facilities, including a 168-bed acute care hospital and a 127,000-square-foot medical office building supportive of an orthopedic center of excellence and outpatient surgery center.

Architectural associate for a renovation project for the Hospital South Addition at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center (PSHMC). The project involved space planning and design services to reconfigure approximately 25,000 square feet of space divided into two separate units with elevators, visitor support space and shared staff support zones located in the center between the east and west wings. Each wing consists of a 12-bed, single-occupancy patient unit with: a central nursing station at the core for maximized patient observation, efficient workflow, and heightened staff collaboration.

Architectural associate for the renovation of an existing retail space at the Oaks Mall to clinical space. UF Health The Oaks features ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and audiology services provided by UF faculty in a 138,000-square-foot former retail space. The facility also has an outpatient surgical center to support ophthalmology and otolaryngology procedures.

Architectural associate for master planning and design of a new academic medical center including research and teaching facilities. The Phase I buildings include a 380-bed academic hospital with a plan for expansion to 800 beds including Level I trauma center and the medical clinics of UF Health. The hospital project is envisioned as a high-rise bed tower and will total approximately 940,000 square feet. A central energy plant will be needed to support the hospital and will also take into consideration the future phases to support expansions and research facilities. Surface parking lots accommodating 1,700 cars and a rooftop helistop will also be included in the project.
